CSI Cairo

Friday, April 22, 2011 by aiyqosim

BismillahirRahmaanirRaheem

Alhamdulillahi wassolatu wassalamu 'ala Rasulillah...

It has been... months since my last post in English. It's only... to write something in English when i'm not accustomed to it, takes double the time writing it in Malay

...Anyhow

Alhamdulillah, recently i'm in Forensic & Toxicology round, the "CSI" round.

Well I used to be a fan of CSI, and now I know, to what extend the film makers cheated us just to show how cool their actors are, and how the investigators ellegantly solved the mysterious cases with sophisticated tools in "drive-thru" fast plots

=)

Anyway, during this 2 weeks of Forensic & Toxicology round, one lecture attracted me the most. By Professor Dr. Mohamed Adly on Fingerprints.

Fingerprints or Dactylography is extremely important, especially for medicolegal investigators and police, to identify a living person. It is one of the most dependable method for identification, simply because of 2 facts;

It is unique and constant. The occurence of 2 living person having the same fingerprints is 1 in 64 millions! That is to say, it is almost impossible for 2 person to have the same fingerprints. And your fingerprints will never change by time.

Few years back, I remembered watching one of Dr. Zakir Naik's video(as far as i remembered) on the miracles of al-Quran from scientific point of view. And he quoted 2 verses from Surah Al-Qiyaamah;

"Does man think We shall not put his bones back together?

In fact, We can reshape his very fingertips"

Surah Al-Qiyaamah, verse 3 & 4

Some people asked, "Why fingertips?" "What's so special about our fingertips?"

And Subhanallah, now we know that, there's something special on our fingertips. It is so special to the fact that Allah's ability to reshape the fingertips in The Day Of Resurrection is more superlative than the act of putting human's bones back togehter. MasyaAllah...

And that thing on your fingertips will be some sort of identification method for every human being, that Allah will reshape our fingertips and fingerprints, and we will know then, who is who. So surely no one will escape the Day Of Resurrection because we will be holding our own ID on that day, as our fingerprints are specific for each one of us.

Of course Allah Knows everything. There's no need for fingerprints identification for Allah to know who is Abu, and who is Ali, and who is Kasim and so on... But this is the way to teach human being, especially the ignorants and the unbelievers, tha there is no God but Allah, and Prophet Muhammad SAW is The Messanger fo Allah, and Al-Quran is Kalamullah The Words Of Allah.

And one more thing, this is how Allah teaches us to think. One of the Mukjizat of Al-Quran is, it is The Book Of Guidance, not just a book, not a history book, not a philosophy book, not a literature book, or even a book of science. So, don't just read it blindly, understand the meaning of it, and THINK!

As Dr. Zakir Naik said,

"Al-Quran is a Boof Of Signs, not a book of Science".

As philosophers always say,

"I think, therefore I am"

So, start to think

"Do they not look at the camels, how they are created?

At the heaven, how it was raised high?

At the mountains, how they were set down?

And at the earth, how it was spread out?

So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder."

Surah Al-Ghashiah, verse 17-20

That's all, Allahu A'la wa A'lam...

Thanks for reading, as it is the first step in education.

=)

What Does It Mean To Study Ophthalmology

Thursday, January 13, 2011 by aiyqosim
Bismillah,

Alhamdulillahi wassolatu wassalaamu 'ala Rasulillah SAW...

All praises to Allah, the Ophthalmology End Round Exam just now went smoothly, eventhough frankly speaking, the examiner doctor did answer most of the questions he asked by himself. heheh =)

Anyhow, I specially write this post for you guys, my fourth year Cairo University collegues, to bring up one important question. The question that, for me, is the most crucial of all questions you've successfully answered in the previous exams. A 'must-be-individually-answered' question, which is...

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO STUDY OPHTHALMOLOGY?

(APA ERTINYA KAU BELAJAR OPHTHALMOLOGY?)

Yes, it takes 2 months in Egypt for a full course of Ophthalmology in Egypt, in comparison to only 2 weeks in Malaysia. But, what have we gained? What have we learnt in this 2 months? Sketch it in your own mind please...

I was astonished, when we started the course in November 2010, that for the whole 2 months, we are discussing about our 2 eye balls and the tissues around it. Just about two tiny little 2.4cm spheres! And it takes also a 4 inches-thick well-known Kanski text book to tell us about these 2 tiny balls.

"What is sooo special about these balls anyway?"

Fovea Centralis

Do you know, that there is an area named Fovea Centralis at the back of the eye, that is responsible for our visual acuity, color vision, and formed sense? It is the part that is responsible for most of the function of the eye, to see the world. That is to say, the part that plays the 'hero part' of your eye. And do you have any idea how big it is? It's only 1.5 mm in diameter! And you are seeing the whole universe with this 1.5 mm Fovea. Subhanallah...

Eye Ball & Diopter

Do you have any idea, how big(or small) is 1 mm? It is as big as the piece of fingernail you cut every Friday. Or less? =)

The issue is, for every 1 mm change in the horizontal length of your eye ball, there will be a change of 3 Diopter of your vision. If you have extra 1 mm length in your eye ball, your eye power will drop as much as 3 Diopter!

In other words, only 1 mm change in eye ball length will change your vision from crystal-clear to haziness!

The point is, look at how meticulously Allah has created us. How sharp the details are in every organ inside our body, for only as small change as 1 mm will affect our life significantly. Subhanallah...

(such is) the artistry of Allah, who disposes of all things in perfect order:

-Surah An-Naml, verse : 88-

The Best Superimpose Machine

Do you know, the eyes differ from all other paired organs in the human body in that each eye perceives one image of the image seen, yet both eyes are seeing from its own different visual angle.

Alhamdulillah, thanks to Mr. BRAIN (Area 18) for being the best super-impose machine ever! And also, thanks to Extra Ocular Muscles for having equal muscle balance in order to bring both eyes directed to the same object of regard. Subhanallah...

Precorneal Tear Film

Please refer to previously written post... LINK

.......................................................

Again, let us remember one thing. To seek for the truth, or to find the miracles beyond Allah's creation, it is as simple as to see into ourselves!

"As in your selves, will ye not then see?"

-Surah Ad-Dzariaat. verse : 21-

.........................................................

So, have you got the message? We are not ordinary students. We are Muslim students. So make a difference!

Give meaning to what you've learnt. Seek for the signs of The Creator in everything we do, in everything we study, in everything we see, as it is the principle of learning that Allah has thaught and shown to us in Surah Al-Qhaashiah, verse 17-20;

"Do they not look at the camels, how they are created?

At the heaven, how it was raised high?

At the mountains, how they were set down?

And at the earth, how it was spread out?

So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder."

So.... have you got the answers? ;)

Jazakumullah kheir, thanks for reading.

Kisah Ibn Rusyd Sambil Dinner

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 by aiyqosim

Bismillahirrahmaanirraheem

Alhamdulillah, wassolatu wassalaamu 'ala Rasulillah SAW.

"Barangsiapa belajar anatomi(perubatan), bertambah imannya"

MasyaAllah...

Suka saya berkongsi satu kalam.

"Ikhlas dan rahsia itu mengekalkan(to conserve) amal"

(tak tahulah tepat ke tak pemilihan perkataan bahasa Melayu tu, Allahu A'lam)

Adlan & Ust. Hairul. jasamu dikenang.... )

dari kiri : ibrahim, ust adlan, ust hairul, ust bazli(kot...hehe)

Sekian sahaja, perkongsian ringkas, sementara pening kepala baca buku ophthalmology, harap bermanfaat...

Allahu A'lam,

Wassalam

Bittaufeeq wannajah semua!

The Eye

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 by aiyqosim

I'm currently in the Ophthalmology round, and i found it very interesting. Just after 3 days of lectures and clinical tutorials, something 'kicked' my brain, and 'poked' my heart.

Do you know, our eyes, are all the time covered with a thin layer of tear? It is called tear film, or more specifically, precorneal tear film. Surprisingly, this 'humble' thin layer plays a crucial role in mantaining the moisture of the eye surface, as well as to clean and to lubricate it. But of course, we never notice its presence, as it is transparent and humble. =)

But that is just the beginning. The thing that really 'kicked' my brain was the minute anatomy of the tear film. It is actually formed of 3 layers, which are lipid layer, aqueous(water) layer, and mucous layer.

The lipid layer coats the aqueous layer; provides a hydrophobic barrier that evaporates and prevents tears spilling onto the cheek, also preventing drying of the eye.

The aqueous layer promotes spreading of the tear film.

And the mucous layer coats the cornea; provides a hydrophilic layer; allows for even distribution of the tear film.

Source : WIKI

The question that came accross my mind was, can this thin layer of tear film possibly be invented by any genius? I mean, we, humans, have been walking on this earth for thousands of years, but it was only recently that we discovered this little tiny fact about the tear film and its components. And we can only describe it!

This question is a great challenge to the Atheists. Because the only reasonable answer is, THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH! He created us, with all the details. And we are here, just to describe His creation, and to praise Him all the time, not to challenge Him. (BTW, Darwinism had burried itself into its own grave, click HERE)

So as i've said before, to seek the truth, it is as easy as to see into ourselves!

"As in your selves, will ye not then see?"

Allahu A'lam

Wassalam, thanks for reading, jazakumuLlah kheir =)

Dialing Up Him The Almighty

Saturday, November 13, 2010 by aiyqosim
What will you do if you miss someone? What will you do when you miss your mother? Yes, you simply call her, talk with her, ask about life, family, home, and so on. Just dial up +6038925**** and there she is! In average, let's say.... once per week.

What about your boyfriend/girlfriend? Of course you miss him/her more than you miss your mother. Don't you? So you will call him/her every day, once per day. Just dial up +20118709***, and there he/she is!

did you miss somebody? just give a call

Now, what if there is someone, so close to you, that you call him 5 times a day. Logically, should he be the one that you miss the most? Well, sadly speaking, that's not the case for all of us. Even worse, many of us, don't even call him 5 times a day, eventhough the contact number is as simple as 24434! And it's an international line, free of charge!

...........................................................................................................

For the past 2 days i've been attending a Bridges Foundation (LINK) workshop : How To Answer Difficult Questions About Islam, conducted by brother Fadel Soliman, an Egyptian international speaker. We've discussed many important issues on misconceptions about Islam, but one thing attracted me last night, an analogy on dialing up Allah.

As you can guess, it is the Solaah, the 5 prayers. And the contact number is very simple, 24434, which are the rakaat of Solaat. We can even make an extra appointment with Him The Almighty. Interestingly, it doesn't need any reservation, you can do it anytime, day, night, midnight, after office hour etc., and there is no limitation of time.

...brother Fadel Soliman, jazahuLlah...

Brother Fadel Soliman told us, there are 3 reasons human pray to Allah or do ibadah to Allah :

1. For fear of the hellfire

2. For the paradise

3. For love to Allah

They are not contradictory to each other, but the third one is the best of all. The best 'ibad(worshippers) are those who pray to Allah because they love Him, that's all.

So, let's check our schedule, and make extra appointments with Allah everyday. Improve the quality of our Solaah, and we will be the best 'ibad insyaALlah.

Just want to share some of the questions that we've discussed for the past 2 days. InsyaAllah, more posts after this, so stay tune~

Wassalam...

Don't You See? The Queen Is A She!

Sunday, November 7, 2010 by aiyqosim
AlhamduliLlah, the interview went smoothly and the doctors were friendly. The OSPE (Objective Structured Practical Examination) was also ok. My reports were also ok and most importantly, all of them were approved. yeay!

Before restarting my regime with Community Medicine & Public Health books for the written exam this Thursday, I just want to share a story, taught by a friend Nabil Al Hanis, a story of the prophet Sulaiman AS and the colony of ants.

The famous story was beautifully mentioned in The Holy Al Quran, chapter 27, An-Naml, The Ant, verse number 17-19. But, SubhanaLlah... one thing dazzled me. I mean, really literally dazzled me.

From the verse number 18, (translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said: "O ye ants, get into your habitations, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it."

Note the word namlatun/namlah (نملة), it was a female ant. A female ant was the leader of the colony? Yes, the colony of ants was led by a female ant. Yes, the queen!

MasyaAllah, with the modern technology, now we know that the highest rank in the hierarchy of a colony af ants is... yes, the queen!

Allah SWT told us, through the Holy Quran, that the "king" of the ant's colony is a QUEEN. And that was about 14 centuries back, long before the scientists even know how many legs an ant has!

So, my point being,

(such is) the artistry of Allah, who disposes of all things in perfect order:

-Surah An-Naml, verse : 88-

Dr. Abdullah Zakir Naik always end his presentation or debate by,

"...some people may only need one aayah(proof) to accept Islam, but some others, let it be thousands of aayaat(proof's') he/she will never listen. They are just like what Al Quran has told us,

Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path)..."

Allahu A'lam, may Allah grant us the wisdom, to see the signs of The Creator beyond His creations, ameen...

As In Yourselves Will Ye Not Then See?

Saturday, October 2, 2010 by aiyqosim
BismiLlah, wassolatu wassalam 'ala RasuliLlah...

Reviewing my life throughout my second year in Kasr al-Ainy Medical School, Cairo University brings me to an Anatomy lecture back in 2008. Personally one of the most remembered lecture, delivered by a professor who had marked my heart with his thoughts.

Professor Dr. Mo'tasem Bellah el-Sheriff, he always said,

"You must always ask 'why' to understand the way of The Creator".

One day, during the lecture of Perineum, he asked the class, "How come, the testes are low down in the Perineum and receiving its blood supply high up directly from the Abnominal Aorta? Also, the lymphatic drainage goes to Paraaortic lymph nodes whic is high up in relation to the testes? Also, the nerve supply comes from the sympathetic chain high up along the Thoracic Spine?"

If you are a big fan of Dr. Zakir Abdul Kareem Naik, you should know the answer better than the medical students eventhough you are an architect.

The answer of the question lies within the embryologic origin of the gonads(testicles & ovaries). Do you know, during the embryonic stages, the reproductive organs begin their development near the kidney between the spinal column and the eleventh and twelfth ribs?Later they descend; the female gonads stop in the pelvis, while the male gonads continue their descent before birth to reach the scrotum through the Inguinal Canal.

Astonishingly, Al-Quran Al- Kareem had proven this little fact long before the scientists even created the term 'Embryology'!

"Now let man but think from what he is created!-

He is created from a drop emitted-

Proceeding from between the back bone and the ribs."

Al-Quran, Surah At-Thoriq, 86 : 5-7

Yes! 'a drop emitted' is the semen, which comes from the testes, which originated from 'between the back bone(spine) and the ribs'. That is a real Embryology, in Al- Quran!

Of course, there must be a reason why Allah says, in Surah Adz-Dzaariaat, verse number 21

"As in your selves, will ye not then see?"

That's right, to seek for the truth, it is as easy as to see into ourselves!

Indeed, as a medical student in particular, we must always ask 'why?' when we study new facts. Not just blindly read and memorize the facts that are supposed to be the 'adjuvant' or 'enhancer' for our imaan. Get use to do simple personal research for every new knowledge we studied. Or simply ask our lecturers, for the Egyptian Doctors and Professors will sure have some extra story to tell us regarding certain medical facts. We are not just an ordinary students, we are Muslim students. Make a difference!

For me, one of the biggest challenge studying in Egypt is, you tend to either : get bored easily with the system because of your unreasonably high expectation, or to get enthusiastic for extra knowlegde especially Islamic-medical related knowledge.

As I always say, You are the Asset of The Ummah. We are the Asset of The Ummah! The Ummah needs us, so we have to serve The Ummah. How can we serve, if we have nothing in our minds and hearts?

Allahu A'lam.

p/s : Looking forward to show up to Community Medicine lecture next week inshaAllah... :D
